St.Luke the Evangelist
Luke the Evangelist was one of the four Gospel writers and is traditionally believed to have been a physician before becoming a follower of Christ. He is the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, both of which emphasize compassion, healing, mercy, and care for the poor and suffering. Because of his medical background and attention to healing miracles in Scripture, he became known as the patron saint of doctors, surgeons, and healthcare workers.
Throughout his writings, Saint Luke highlighted Christ’s concern for the sick and vulnerable. He carefully documented miracles of healing and stories of restoration, showing both the physical and spiritual care Jesus gave to others. Luke also traveled alongside Paul the Apostle on missionary journeys, supporting and encouraging early Christian communities despite hardships and dangers.
Saint Luke’s legacy continues to inspire healthcare workers, caregivers, and all who dedicate their lives to helping others heal. He reminds us that medicine, compassion, and faith can work together in service of human dignity and care.
Prayer to Saint Luke
Saint Luke,
faithful physician and servant of Christ,
pray for all doctors, nurses, surgeons, and caregivers
who work tirelessly to bring healing to others.
Grant them wisdom in difficult decisions,
steady hands in moments of urgency,
and compassion for every patient they serve.
Pray also for those who are sick or recovering,
that they may find comfort, strength, and hope during illness.
May all who suffer be treated with dignity, kindness, and care,
and may God’s healing presence remain with them always. Amen.
