Fifth Disease (Parovirus B19)
Fifth disease is a mild viral illness most commonly seen in children, especially those in school or daycare settings. It is caused by parvovirus B19 and often begins with cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, mild fever, and fatigue. A few days later, a distinctive bright red rash appears on the cheeks, sometimes followed by a lacy rash on the arms and legs. Although it is usually not serious, it can spread easily before symptoms are fully visible. Most children recover completely with rest, fluids, and basic care, though the rash may come and go for a short time.
“You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them.” – Psalm 10:17
Lord,
You see even the smallest discomfort and every quiet tear.
Draw near to these children as they rest and recover,
and bring comfort in ways they may not even have words to ask for.
Ease their fatigue, calm their fevers,
and restore their energy little by little each day.
Surround them with patience, gentle care, and love,
so they may feel safe and at peace through their healing.
May their strength return fully,
and may joy follow quickly after illness fades. Amen.
